7 Facts About Sunscreen That Most People Don’t Know
SPF Isn't Everything:
SPF 30 and SPF 50 sunscreens offer similar protection. SPF 30 protects 97% of UVB radiation and SPF 50 98%. No sunscreen protects 100%.
Broad-Spectrum Matters:
"Broad-spectrum" on the label. Sunscreen blocks UVA and UVB radiation. UVB burns and UVA ages. Both cause skin cancer.
Water-Resistant, Not Waterproof:
Even "water-resistant" sunscreens must be reapplied every 40–80 minutes. Sunscreen isn't waterproof.
Chemical vs. Physical:
Chemical and physical sunscreens exist. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, while zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreens block or scatter them.
Expiration Dates Matter:
Sunscreens expire. Expiring sunscreen may not protect. They last 3 years, but replace them annually.
More Doesn't Mean Better:
Thick sunscreen doesn't necessarily protect better. Application matters. Cover your body with 1 ounce (a shot glass full) and reapply.
Indoor Protection is Relevant:
Through windows, UV rays can reach indoors. UVA rays permeate glass, causing accelerated aging.
Apply sunscreen if you sit near windows for long periods.
